What Are Minor Chords?
Before we dive into minor chords, let’s first figure out the 3 notes of a major chord.
Major Chord: Start from the root note then go up to the “3rd” note of that scale. This is called the “major 3rd”. To find out if that 3rd note is sharp or flat count up 4 half steps from the root note. To find the 3rd note of the chord, go up to the 5th note in the scale (or you can count 3 half steps from the 3rd also known as a minor 3rd). So, if we are making an “A” chord, the 3rd note in the “A” scale is “C#” and the 5th note is “E”.
Minor Chord:
A minor chord is like the major chord, but it has a “minor 3rd” and not a “major 3rd”. So just take the 3rd note in the scale you are in and flat that note (or count up 3 half steps from the root note). So, the notes in an “A minor” chord are “A”, “C”, “E”. Notice how the 3rd note in the minor scale is “C” and not “C#”.
